Seberang Perai Tengah- A RM1 note was among the few belongings found on the body of a man who fell off the ferry which was heading from Penang island to the mainland. Other items found on the unknown individual included an old model handphone and a motorcycle key.George Town OCPD Asst Comm Che Zaimani Che Awang said the body was found at 10.30am on the north of the Sweetenham Pier on Sunday (Feb 17).
“The body was retrieved and sent to the Penang Hospital for a post-mortem. The post-mortem will be conducted on Monday (Feb 18) at 9am to identify the cause of death,” he said.The search and rescue (SAR) operation, which started on Friday (Feb 15), comprised of MMEA, state Civil Defence Force (APM), state Marine Police and Fire and Rescue Department.
It was reported that MMEA said Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) Langkawi, which coordinates sea-related accidents for northern Peninsular Malaysia, started the operation after receiving a distressed call.MMEA received information from the Penang Port about the unidentified victim who had fallen into the sea at 9.24am on Friday (Feb 15).Based on the initial investigation by Rapid Ferry Sdn Bhd, a passenger on board the ferry Pulau Undan spotted a drowning person in the sea at about 8.50am.
